City of Fargo Carbon Dashboard

The City of Fargo’s Journey to Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030:

It all started in 2001, when being "green" was cool, but "carbon footprint" still hadn’t gone mainstream. The City of Fargo started capturing the methane the landfill was producing and not only reduced the harmful effects to the environment, but made a little green (cash) in the process! And that continues today!

The Beginning: Landfill

Definitions
  • Cargill (Offsite) CO2 reduction based on methane destruction by Cargill (metric tons)
  • Generator (Onsite) CO2 reduction based on methane destruction by Generator (metric tons)
  • Flare (Onsite) CO2 reduction based on methane destruction by Flare (metric tons)

The City didn’t stop there, from LED lights, to solar power, to more efficient HVAC systems, we are always looking for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings.

The present: City Buildings

But we won’t stop there! The next step is to look at the City’s fleet of vehicles. EV is just one avenue we are exploring. The landfill has the infrastructure in place to use even more captured methane and transform it to a clean burning alternative to diesel. We call it "trash gas!"
